UN envoy: Lot of work needed to create jobs for young people

A lot of work is needed to create jobs for millions of young people around the world, says Ahmad Alhendawi, the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, UN Radio reports.
Mr. Alhendawi spoke to reporters in New York via video-link from Dakar, Senegal for the first time since he assumed his position last month.
In his first overseas mission, the youth envoy attended a global meeting on education in the post-2015 development agenda.
The first ever UN envoy on youth said with 1.2 billion, the world has the largest population of young people in its history and 90 per of them live in developing countries.
«The youth unemployment facts are daunting with 425 million jobs needed to be created in the next fifteen years. But the facts today about the job market and the opportunities available for young people are not very promising and require a lot of work. These challenges to integrate youth in the job market and to allow them for better access to quality education and to have better access for job opportunities and political participation as well are at the top of my mandate,» Mr. Alhendawi admitted.
Mr. Alhendawi said he will be working with the United Nations Inter-Agency Network on Youth Development made up of UN entities dealing with youth issues.
He told reporters that the network has prepared a final draft of the system-wide action plan to coordinate the youth programming among all the different UN agencies.
