Putin sets focus on making Russia more attractive to investors

Bolstering Russia’s investment potential to ensure a real influx of investment is an important goal the government should strive to achieve, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday, Voice of Russia reports.
Russia is one of the largest markets in Europe and it ranks among the top five investment-attractive countries.
«We should use this potential to create to set up new productions and create new jobs,» Putin said.
He added that a better business climate, the removal of administrative hurdles and a war on corruption were the focal points of the economic agenda.
The Voice of Russia’s correspondent today attended an enlarged meeting of the Russian government chaired by President Vladimir Putin.
The correspondent cited the Russian leader as saying there was no going back to the pre-crisis economic model. «Russia can’t keep going with the tide any longer and wait for the economy to take its course. We must map out the agenda for ourselves,» Mr. Putin stressed.
He pointed out that Russia had «fundamental advantages» for attracting foreign investment inflows.
Speaking at the meeting was Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, who said the government’s raison d’être was to improve living conditions of all citizens and provide them with ample opportunities for self-realization.
The premier said that most risks for the country came from the inside. He said the export-oriented economic model had reached its limit. «We need a technological breakthrough,» Mr. Medvedev stressed.
He also underscored the importance of the next few years for the world at large. «The next five years will be of great significance because they will shape the post-crisis world,» Medvedev said.
