UN: Huge difference between global warming goals and fossil fuel output

21.11.2019 13:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — As of this week, a number of international agencies have issued the Production Gap report showing a great difference between the amount of fossil fuels that countries are going to produce, and the commitments they have made to cut global warming, UN Radio reports. It is to be admitted, the Production Gap report has been developed by leading research organizations, including the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), International Institute for Sustainable Development, Overseas Development Institute, CICERO Centre for International Climate and Environmental Research, Climate Analytics, and UNEP. Over fifty researchers contributed to the analysis and review, spanning numerous universities and additional research organizations. The Production Gap report is the first of its kind; it says the countries worldwide, by 2030, are going to produce 120% more fossil fuels than can be burned if the world is to limit warming to an increase of 1.5 degrees. In meanwhile, while commenting on the Production Gap report, the Head of the UN Environment Programme, Inger Anderson, said that the report calls for a long overdue focus on fossil fuels, which still dominate the world’s energy supplies. The authors of the report point out that there are many options available for closing the production gap, including limiting exploration and extraction, removing subsidies, and aligning future production plans with climate goals.
