UNHCR forecasts South Sudan refugees number boost
24.10.2017 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Around half a million South Sudanese could become refugees this year, UN Radio says referring to the the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) report.
As to the report, continued instability within the world youngest nation could lead to a rise of the number of people seeking shelter in neighbouring countries.
So far, over two million have fled to Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic.
As to the report, the UN agency says that «if these projections are proved correct, this would be an exodus not witnessed in Africa since the days of the Rwandan genocide».
It is to be admitted, the officials from UNHCR, the OCHA (UN humanitarian affairs office) and their partners recently briefed diplomats and other experts in Nairobi on the crisis within South Sudan.
They also highlighted a shortfall of funding to support the refugees.
As to the officials, a US$1.4 milliard humanitarian response plan is now only about 25% funded.
