Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is deeply concerned about the impact of the breach of the Kakhovka Dam and partial drainage of its reservoir on agriculture, fishery, forestry, rural communities and rural livelihoods.
The Kakhovka Reservoir and wider Dnipro River system are the primary agricultural water resource for the area. Significantly reduced water levels may affect crop production in Khersonska oblast and neighbouring areas in the south of Ukraine. The reservoir and upstream Dnipro River were also critical fishery resources for the region.
FAO is participating in the Post Disaster Needs Assessment under the leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator for Ukraine. FAO Ukraine is conducting a rapid assessment of damage and losses in the agricultural sector, in close coordination with national authorities and the other UN partners.
Additionally, FAO is supporting the national emergency response to agricultural needs, which will be strengthened by this assessment. This also is being closely coordinated with national authorities and UN partners.
