Ukraine conveyed 17 paintings of Italian artists saved by Ukrainian law enforcers and border guards to Italy

22.12.2016 10:14 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — As of yesterday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has conveyed 17 paintings of Rubens, Tintoretto, Pisanello, Caroto and Mantegna heisted from Verona’s Museum within Nov 2015 and detained by the Ukrainian State Border Service within May 2016 when being transferred to the territory of Moldova, President Petro Poroshenko Press Office reports. It is to be reminded, after finding the pieces of art, Poroshenko instructed Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Kostiantyn Yelisieiev to contact with Italian partners and invite experts to authenticate paintings and settle all formalities regarding their handover. It is to be admitted, as to the documents provided by the Ukrainian border service and military prosecution, the overall cost of this collection exceeds EUR16 million. As of yesterday, while addressing the attendees in the Gothic hall of Khanenko museum, where the paintings have been stored, Poroshenko congratulated them on successful completion of all official procedures and necessary expertise. «A terrible tragedy happened when the paintings of the best masters of humanity have been heisted from Verona’s Museum. This is as if a part of the city’s heart has been stolen. But due to the efficient cooperation of the prosecution, investigation, border guards and other Ukrainian law enforcers, we managed not only to shut down the smuggling channel of art values and detain the smugglers, but also to find these priceless works of art that we return today to our Italian friends upon completion of all the official procedures,» Poroshenko said.
