AGRO PERSPECTIVE «Ukrainian Grain & Oilseed Market » October 29-November4, 2010`43`(297)

Sunflower

Within reporting week Ukrainian domestic market sunseeds prices have been falling due to market panic. Thus, on Fri prices have fallen to UAH3,900 per MT as trade had been  suspended.
As of this week, EXW basis sunseeds prices ranged within UAH4,000–4,100 per MT, EXW/ UAH4,050–4,200 per MT, CPT (depending on sunseeds quality/shipment region).
Experts say domestic market sunseeds prices will resume growing.
Within this week Ukrainian sunseeds export prices ranged within US$580–600 per MT (FOB Black Sea ports).
As of Oct 28/10, Ukrainian agrarians have harvested 6.88 mn MT sunseeds at total 4.3 mn ha (97% planned); sunseeds average yield equaled to 16,0 metric centners per ha.
As reported Ministry of Agrarian Policy referring to regions operative data, as of this year Oct 29, Ukrainian sunseeds average purchase price was UAH4,173 per MT, up against last week UAH3,971 per MT.
As of this year Oct 29, Ukrainian sunseeds minimal purchase price was registered in Sumy region (UAH3,850 per MT), while maximal purchase price was registered in Dnipropetrovsk region (UAH4,400 per MT).
It is to be admitted, this year Oct 29 Ukrainian sunseeds average purchase price is 82% up against last year Oct 29 (UAH2,293 per MT).
As to this year Oct 25-Oct 29 Ukrainian exchange markets trade results, 2 class sunsseds (2010 crop) average sale price was UAH3,556.31 per MT (FCA, spot); minimal sale price was UAH3,473.19 per MT (FCA, spot), maximal — UAH3,639.34 per MT (FCA, spot).
As to Ministry of Agrarian Policy data, Ukrainian exchange market new crop sunseeds trade volume totaled (as of this year Oct 29) 13,679 MT, incl. spot trade — 10,015 MT (domestic contracts — 2,633 MT; export contracts — 7,382 MT) and forward trade — 3,664 MT (only export contracts).
As of this year Oct 28, companies faced sunoil export difficulties which appeared due to unofficial export ban originated by Ukrainian customs house by its having refused to carry out  sunoil export customs procedures. As a result, market was seized by panic, so processors suspended sunseeds purchases in apprehension of sunoil export halt.
As of this year Oct 28 working day end, sunseeds purchases still weren’t resumed. However, market uncertainty lasted only 2 days: on Fri (this year Oct 29) market operators declared, also unofficially, that export limitations were removed.
In our opinion, this panic had been created artificially in order to reduce domestic market sunseeds prices to let some companies purchase sunseeds at advantageous prices: in fact, sunseeds prices have fallen averagely by UAH200–300 per MT (in some regions — by UAH500 per MT). However, the only thing remains unknown — who was organizer of this action. As it seems, organizer could be grains trading companies (which are eager to switch from grains market to sunseeds/sunoil markets to evade grains market problems) or State bodies (which thus tried to force down sunoil prices in that way). In any case, however, panic was a testing of market reaction (which, in fact, wasn’t long in coming).
In our opinion, sunseeds prices will recover, — as there are, so far, no objective reasons for their fall.

Sunoil, sun.pell

Within reporting week Ukrainian crude sunoil market didn’t much slacken even despite Oct 28 market panic. Prices have been backed by global market prices growth, RF active purchases and Egypt recent tender.
