Capacity of Ukrainian solar power plants to exceed 2 GW in 5 years
03.10.2013 10:12 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
In 5 years the installed capacity of Ukrainian solar power plants is expected to exceed 2 GW, and the country will join the worlds top five emerging markets for the development of solar energy, NRCU reports referring to the forecast published on Wednesday by the market intelligence and market research firm IHS.
Its review covers a total of 40 countries that have so far installed less than 1 GW of solar generating capacity. IHS analysts believe that in the next five years the new markets will provide further intensive development of solar energy, annually increasing the capacity of their solar power plants by an average of 38%, while global growth is expected to average 13%. As a result, the new markets will account for 19% of all photovoltaic installations in the world, compared to 7% last year. «Around the world, new markets are appearing for the development of photovoltaic thanks to government incentives…Despite the fact that these markets sometimes have huge barriers in the form of limited funding, uncertainty in regulation, companies may benefit on these new markets that are growing rapidly,» reads the review. European countries are expected to provide the greatest demand for photovoltaic modules among the new markets. Relatively stable financial conditions and the availability of experienced companies in the field of solar energy will provide rapid growth after regulatory policy is determined. Poland, Turkey and Russia are beginning to offer incentives schemes, while Ukraine and Romania are intensively developing solar energy, according to the IHS review. At present, Ukraine is actively developing renewable energy to enhance its energy security and independence, solve local problems of energy supply, and reduce negative environmental impacts from power engineering. The total installed capacity of Ukraines operating solar power plants doubled last year to 372 MW. More than 100 projects of solar power plants with the total capacity exceeding 1.4 GW are now at various stages of implementation. The facilities are built by Portuguese, German, French, Austrian, Czech, and Israeli companies.
