South Africa Sugar Production and Exports Estimated Down

According to the report of the USDA Sugar: World Markets and Trade (November 2024), South Africa sugar production in 2024/25 (May through April) is forecast down 3 percent from last year to 2.0 million tons as unfavorable hot and dry weather lowered cane production and yields. Continued investments in improved cane quality and mill efficiencies are expected to help improve sugar yields in the future. Total sugar exports are estimated down 40,000 tons to 770,000 tons due to the expected drop in sugar production. South Africa is estimated to remain one of the top 10 sugar exporters globally with Malaysia, South Korea, and the United Kingdom the largest destinations this past year. Exports to the United States under the U.S. tariff-rate quota (TRQ) have been steady over the last several years at around 37,000 tons. Imports are estimated down 3 percent to 350,000 tons with 93 percent coming from Eswatini during the past year. Eswatini is part of Sothern African Customs Union (SACU) and thus not subject to import duties. The South African Revenue Service doubled the custom duty on sugar in August 2024 from R1093.6 ($60.72) to R2348.9 ($130.41) to protect the industry from lower global sugar prices, limiting imports. South Africa is one of the top 40 sugar importers.
