Shelter still among the "enormous needs" two months after deadly Philippines typhoon
09.01.2014 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Two months after Typhoon Haiyan caused widespread devastation in the Philippines, providing shelter for survivors remains a pressing issue, UN Radio says referring to the UN Humanitarian Affairs Office (OCHA) report.
As to report, over four million people were displaced by the storm which struck on 8 November.
Humanitarian agencies say more funding is urgently needed to scale up activities.
OCHA’s Russell Geekie, who is based in Manila, says that a $788 million appeal to support urgent needs including emergency shelter, health and sanitation, is only 42 per cent funded.
«But the greatest needs right now are for shelter. You know, I can’t say that enough times. We’ve provided shelter - at least basic emergency materials - for over 330,000 households. That’s more than a million people. But you still have enormous, enormous needs. There’s four million people that are displaced, and this is going to take a long time,» Mr. Geekie admits.
OCHA reports that although schools opened this week, many are still being used as evacuation centres.
