World Food Programme building up action as Zimbabwe droughts leave millions food insecure
22.07.2019 11:13 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Within last few weeks, a severe drought has rendered more than a third of rural households within Zimbabwe (about 3.5 million people) dangerously food insecure, UN Radio says referring to UN World Food Programme (WFP) Spokesperson Herve Verhoosel report.
As to Verhoosel, the situation is likely to last from now until this year Sept with a further deterioration into this year Dec (what will widen the impact to more than 4.7 million people).
Besides, as to him, the hunger period will peak at the height of the lean season, within 2020 Jan-Mar (when 59% of rural households, or over 5.5 million people, will be food insecure).
As to Verhoosel, given the scale and scope of the food insecurity within Zimbabwe, WFP is planning to scale up to assist over two million people by the peak of the lean season within early next year.
Until then, teams will continue providing food assistance to the most vulnerable Zimbabwe populations, while also helping communities to build resilience to climate change and future shock impacts.
As to Verhoosel, for the next nine months, WFP urgently requires US$173 million to meet these needs.
It is to be admitted, though WFP had initially planned within this year Jul-Oct to help some 560,000 people each month within Zimbabwe areas affected by cyclones and droughts, the rising need has sparked the agency to scale that number to 1.25 million beneficiaries per month.
As to Verhoosel, in order to provide adequate and timely assistance, «resources must now be mobilized in response to grown needs».
