UNICEF: To stop measles, it is necessary to educate people
25.04.2019 17:36 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of now, measles is rapidly spreading around the world, both within the poor and the rich countries. The main cause of the outbreak is the low level of immunization, usually caused by the reluctance of parents to make vaccinations for their children. So, the UNICEF (UN Children’s Fund) has made a new call for the countries to dispel the myths about the harm of vaccination, and stop the spread of measles, UN Radio reports.
It is to be admitted, within this year first three months, 110,000 cases of measles infection were registered globally, up 300% against the last year similar. Also, mortality from measles is boosting: thus, as of 2017, 110,000 people died from it (up 22% against 2016). And most of the deceased are children.
In meanwhile, the UNICEF experts affirm that this alarming situation has occurred due to the vaccination rates’ decline. Thus, Henrietta Fore, UNICEF Executive Director, say that the global measles’ outbreaks we are witnessing today have appeared not by themselves, but due to quite certain reasons. And so, if we really want to stop the spread of this dangerous disease that can be prevented, we must vaccinate every child, both within the poor and rich countries.
«We must all stand on the side of science and health, and confirm the importance of vaccination - what means it is necessary to educate people about scientific literacy, so that they can understand and interpret information about their health and vaccines,» ," UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore and WHO Head Dr Tedros Gebraisius say.
