UN: Liberia boosts efforts to guard against rising seas
16.01.2019 14:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As to experts, now there are strong fears that densely populated parts of the Liberian capital Monrovia could be submerged, unless action is taken to protect the Liberian costs from the rising sea levels (caused by the climate change), UN Radio reports.
It is to be admitted, presently the sea is already affecting the Liberian coastal communities.
It is expected that a one-metre sea level rise could permanently inundate 95 square kilometres of land within the Liberian coastal zone, which is already under threat of heavy seasonal rains and continuing erosion.
Thus, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) has developed a special program to protect the Liberian costs from the sea rise. The program. titled «28,000 Steps in the Right Direction», has been already launched and brings positive results. The UNDP is going to widen its experience of the Liberian costs’ protection on the other countries.
