EU set to impose tariffs on Cambodia, Myanmar rice imports
16.01.2019 12:14 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The European Union is likely this week to impose tariffs on rice coming from Cambodia and Myanmar for the next three years to curb a surge in imports,
Reuters says referring to the EU Commission report.
It is to be admitted, the European Commission is a body which oversees the EU trade policy.
It is to be reminded, as of last year Dec, the European Commission proposed some certain measures and put these to the 28 member countries, but failed to get a clear majority of them in favor.
However, due to the absence of an opinion by the relevant committee, the Commission itself was bound to take the final decision. Thus, it has launched an internal procedure to determine if there is any opposition, with a Wednesday deadline, a source familiar with the process said. If, as expected, there is no opposition, then it would likely announce the start of measures on this week Fri.
As to the report, the Commission proposal is to set a duty of EUR175 (US$200.73) per ton of rice within the first year, dropping to EUR150 within the second and EUR125 euros within the year three.
