ILO: ‘Global care crisis’ set to affect 2.3 milliard people worldwide
29.06.2018 20:13 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Within the sphere of global unpaid care services for the needy people (kids and elderly) a «global care crisis» is looming which can affect 2.3 milliard people by 2030, UN Radio says referring to the ILO (UN International Labour Organization) report.
As to the report, the inequality within this sphere will continue growing so that women will have to perform still more work to care the needy people. Now, women already perform «more than three-quarters» of all unpaid work within this sphere.
So, the report calls for sweeping policy changes regarding the care of children and the elderly; the report says that 269 million jobs could be created within the next 12 years, if Member States double current investment into education, health and social work.
The report warns that if nothing is done the potential impact could be huge since already now 16.4 milliard hours per day are already spent globally within unpaid care work what is the equivalent of two milliard people «working eight hours a day with no remuneration».
The report cites data from 64 countries, representing two-thirds of all the global workers.
As to the report, as of 2015, of the 2.1 milliard people in need of care, 1.9 milliard were children under 15 and the remainder were older persons.
The data also highlights a huge gender gap in the care sector, ILO’s Shauna Olney told journalists in Geneva, explaining that «across the world, women perform 76.2% of the total hours of unpaid care work and over three times more than men».
The report insists on the urgent actions to be taken to tackle the current situation worldwide.
