Da Silva: Illegal fishing treaty marks "dawn of new era"
12.07.2016 10:14 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, while speaking within an event to celebrate the recently adopted Port State Measures Agreement, José Graziano da Silva, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), called it «the dawn of a new era», UN Radio reports.
It is to be admitted, the Port State Measures Agreement is an international treaty aimed specifically at tackling illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The Port State Measures Agreement requires foreign vessels to submit to inspections at any port of call and for port governing states to share information on violations.
Besides, the Agreement is also designed to raise the cost of IUU fishing because it blocks improperly caught fish from being brought to land and sold in markets.
«Illicit fishing may account for up to 26 million tons as we estimate of fish yearly and more than 50% of the worlds total annual capture of fish output. The Agreement provides an innovative and practical way to tackle this problem,» da Silva admitted.
It is to be reminded, the Agreement went into force on this year Jun 5 and over 30 nations as well the European Union on behalf of its 28 members have acceded to the treaty.
