"Lasting resilience" needed as El Niño hits Central America
01.07.2016 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, a crisis meeting of UN agencies and partners took place in Rome to raise awareness of the impact of El Niño on Central America, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, the meeting called for urgent international action to be launched to build «lasting resilience» along Central American so-called «dry corridor».
Reportedly, the weather effect that began in 2015, has finally contributed to two years of drought, which has left 1.6 million food insecure across El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
As to the report, the meeting included top officials from the Food and Agriculture Organization, World Food Program, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development and IFAD.
«Today more than 3.5 million people need food assistance, and many small family farmers have lost their livelihoods. The purpose of our meeting here today is to throw more light on the impact of drought on the Dry Corridor, and to devise actions that result in lasting resilience for the people who live there,» IFAD President Kanayo Nwanze said.
