Food safety control reform is part of obligations under Association Agreement, Lapa says

30.06.2016 20:23 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — As of today, while sharing an interview with a Ukrainian Public Radio «European Truth» program, the Ukrainian Derzhprodspozhyvsluzhba (State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection) Chairman Volodymyr Lapa said the Ukrainian reform of food safety control — is not only our wish but also the obligations under the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU, Government Portal reports. As to him, last year a new Ukrainian law on food safety and quality of food came into force. «This is a fundamental law, but it doesn’t fully take into account the specifics of the State control,» Lapa admitted. Besides, Lapa also noted a draft law «On State control carried out to verify compliance with the law on safety and quality of food and feed, animal health and welfare» had been already elaborated and adopted in the first reading. The draft law is expected to be submitted to the Parliament for the second reading in the near future. «The elaboration of the draft law on State control in the field of safety and quality of food products is aimed to improve the monitoring system and adapt it to the basic norms of European law. This is not only our wish but also the obligations under the Association Agreement,» the Derzhprodspozhyvsluzhba Head emphasized. As to Lapa, the new version of the draft law on State control provides for segregation of products for products of animal origin (subject to enhanced control), vegetable products (due to the 669 EU directive, which also demands an enhanced control) and other products that can be controlled in a simpler way. «We are entering the sphere which adapts our legislation to the requirements of the modern global society,» Lapa stressed.
