UN: Global agreements need to be "implemented with urgency"
22.04.2016 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, while opening a High Level Debate on achieving the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) at UN Headquarters in New York, the President of the UN General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft, said historic agreements on sustainable development and climate change need to be «implemented with urgency» to help overcome global crises, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, the drummers from a school not far away from UN headquarters in New York, begin the first global meeting on the SDGs, since they were agreed by more than 190 countries last September.
As to the report, Lykketoft opened the full day of debate saying that it was time for «all hands on deck» to begin the challenging job of implementing the 17 goals, that promise to put an end to poverty, inequality and hunger.
He said that since the last year Sept (when the SDGs had been agreed by more than 190 countries), the global crises sparked by terrorism, rising conflict and migration, had proved the need for the world to come together, and tackle the root causes.
As to the report, Lykketoft said countries needed to demonstrate their commitment to implementing the SDGs and share effective strategies.
In meanwhile, about 160 countries are expected to sign the Paris Agreement on climate change today at UN headquarters.
