Nations urged to share responsibility for stopping genocide
26.10.2015 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of the last week Fri, while speaking at the launch of an initiative which aims to prevent mass atrocities and genocide, the UN General Assembly Mogens Lykketoft said the voluntary code of conduct would put pressure on the UN Security Council to improve its response, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, Lykketoft amitted its the responsibility of all nation states to prevent atrocities.
Reportedly, the General Assembly President also said that the Security Council needed to respond better to the threat of genocide or mass-atrocities in the future.
Although the new code of conduct is just a voluntary commitment, he said it would put pressure on the Council to act, and hopefully prevent situations like the Rwandan genocide of the early 1990s.
It is to be admitted, so far 92 member states have committed to the new code, and more are expected to follow.
