President Victor Yanukovych, state and city officials have paid tribute to the victims of the massacre in Babyn Yar and laid flowers at the monument in the Babyn Yar National Historical and Memorial Reserve in Kyiv on Friday, NRCU reports referring to the presidential press service.
Babyn Yar is a ravine in Kyiv that became the communal grave for thousands of people who were butchered by the Nazi during the Second World War. The ravine was turned into a burial place of Jews, Russians, Ukrainians, Hungarians, Czechs, Gypsies, prisoners of war, mentally handicapped and ill people. The Nazi did not even spare children, old people, or pregnant women. Some of the victims were buried alive. The participants in the ceremony honoured the victims with a minute of silence.
