Insects have potential to provide food and livelihoods

Forests products, including insects are critical to the fight against hunger, according to a new report by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands, UN Radio says.
The report, entitled «Edible Insects: Future Prospects for food and feed security» was launched in Rome on Monday, at the start of the International Conference on Forests for Food Security and Nutrition.
According to research done by FAO in partnership with Wageningen University, humans worldwide consume more than 1,900 species of insects.
The agency says that globally, the most consumed insects are beetles, caterpillars, wasps and ants, grasshoppers, locusts and crickets.
