ILO global forum to discuss decent work in the fishing industry
15.05.2013 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Government, employer and worker delegates are considering ways to promote decent work in the fishing industry through the implementation and ratification of the ILOs Work in Fishing Convention, 2007, UN Radio reports.
The International Labour Organization (ILO) says delegates are discussing how the Convention can be used as a tool to improve working conditions and to help address major challenges in the industry.
These challenges include the image of the fishing industry; occupational safety and health; conditions of work on small fishing vessels; forced labour and human trafficking; child labour; conditions of work of migrant fishers; illegal fishing and food security.
Chair of the Forum, Captain Nigel Campbell says «The Forum should agree on the way forward for the formulation of national legislation that will allow for the ratification and implementation of the Convention». He said «There will be different challenges in many countries», but «these can be identified and the ILO can consider assistance in addressing them».
Delegates are also addressing the need to strengthen social dialogue between representatives of fishing vessel owners and fishers. They are also exchanging experiences on their efforts to implement this instrument in their home countries and on their own fishing vessels.
