18.07.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon chatted live with Sina Weibo followers while on a visit to China Tuesday.
Weibo is a China-based microblogging service similar to a cross between Twitter and Facebook.
During his 45 minute conversation, Mr. Ban answered about 20 questions from Weibo users. According to preliminary statistics the event has attracted the attention of at least twenty million of internet users.
«I myself, I have been communicating, trying to reach out to the world people through this social media. Most recently, I participated in a Google Hangout, through which I have been able to speak (with) tens of millions of people. This Internet has changed the whole world in many aspects of our life. This is quite creative, this is the best way to reach out and to be connected with the world. United Nations again tries to reach out. We have very noble goals and projects. These goals / projects should be shared by all the people around the world. And we have many valuable information to disseminate, this can be done only through a social media in a very limited time. I sincerely hope that world leaders use this social media more often as I am doing. They have energy, they have creative ideas. These ideas and energy should be fully mobilized and utilized and that is the basic purpose of using this social media. As the Secretary-General, I have learned great lessons that it’s not only United Nations, it’s not only Secretary-General alone, it’s not only world leaders. They have to work, talk and discuss with many people who could otherwise not be connected,» emphasized Mr. Ban.
The Secretary-General is on the first leg of a 10-day trip that will take him to China and South-eastern Europe.
While in the capital, Beijing, Mr. Ban also has meeting with the countrys leadership and is taking part in the 5th Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
