Ukraine, Russia to discuss gas issue at high level

Ukraine and Russia will hold negotiations on the gas issue at a high level, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said in an interview with the Pozner program on Russia’s Channel One.
«Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev will arrive in our country on June 27. A meeting between our two presidents is scheduled for July 12. And gas issue will be one of the most important,» the Ukrainian prime minister said. According to Azarov, Russia’s leadership earlier announced its readiness to start negotiations on the revision of a contract on Russian gas supplies to Ukraine. «I was told that let’s sit down at the negotiating table and let’s reach agreement,» he said. According to the premier, it is unfair that Ukraine buys Russian natural gas at such a high price. «This is an unfair agreement. It was signed for ten years. Will we endure this injustice for ten years?» Azarov said. The Ukrainian prime minister said that the gas contract signed by the previous government affected 46 million Ukrainian citizens, «who firmly believe that we are strategic partners with Russia.» «How can I explain to them that it is so, if you [Russia] are dictating terms to us and driving us into a dead end with such prices? And I, frankly speaking, still see no answer to this question,» he added. «Do we want any preferential terms? Are we asking Russia to supply gas at a price lower than, say, the European price? No. We want to receive gas at the same prices and on the same terms on which you supply gas to all of your partners,» Azarov said, while explaining Ukraine’s position on the gas issue. He also noted that Russia sells natural gas to Ukraine at a price twice higher than that for Germany. In addition, the price of Russian gas for Turkey is USD 190 per thousand cubic meters, compared with the price of USD 550 for Ukraine. «It is impossible to build long-term relations, using some benefits. It is impossible to do that,» the prime minister said.
