Ban: More must be done for the world's oceans
11.06.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
In observance of World Oceans Day, 8 June, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for increased action to preserve oceans, which make up 70-percent of the earths surface.
He said oceans are being threatened by pollution, overfishing, climate change and the deterioration of the marine environment.
The Secretary-General admitted the UNs conference on sustainable development, known as Rio+20, would be an opportunity to mobilize governments and other partners to preserve oceans.
«We will have an opportunity to address these urgent problems when the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development opens in less than two weeks. This will be a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape the future we want. At Rio+20, I expect all partners to take steps to improve the management and conservation of oceans,» said Mr. Ban.
This years World Oceans Day also coincides with the thirtieth anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
