Agrarians have started sunflower sowing
07.04.2004 14:04 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Ukrainian agricultural companies have started sunflower sowing, reported Viktor Slauta, Minister of Agrarian Policy. «Sunflower and maize are being sown now», said V. Slauta. He added he would like agrarians to take into consideration Ministry of Agrarian Policy’s advice and to start sunflower sowing within limits of land areas, recommended by scientists. Though V. Slauta didn’t mention how much sunflower is going to be sown this year, yet experts believe sown areas are to reach 3 million ha. As to Ministry of Agrarian Policy’s earlier forecasts, this year sunseeds’ crop is to total 2,8 million tons, down 1.4 million tons ( -33.3%) against ~ 4.24 million tons in 2003. 2003 sunflower sown areas totaled 3.812.300 ha, up 1.043.000 ha (+ 37.67%) against 2002. Sunflower is actively cultivated by Ukrainian agrarians due to its being considered one of most liquid crops.
