Cartahena Biosafety Protocol has come into effect
24.09.2003 «Agro Perspectiva» (Kyiv) — On Sept 11 Cartahena Biosafety Protocol to the UN Convention on Biodiversity has come into effect, thus becoming the first legal power document to regulate international trade of living modified organisms («LMO», beyond protocol more known as «Genetically Modified Organisms» «GMO») and to guarantee their transportation, processing and usage safety. Ukraine is Protocol’s full-bodied participant, having joined it still in Dec 2002 (Law № 152-IV « On joining of Ukraine the Cartahena Biosafety Protocol to the UN Convention on Biodiversity»). Protocol was signed by more than 100 world countries, while more than 57 world countries have ratified it and became its participants. First Cartahena Biosafety Protocol participants’ meeting is to take place on February 2327, 2004 in Malaysia.
