UN human rights office launches US$253 million appeal

As of yesterday, while speaking from the UN rights office (OHCHR), UN Human Rights High Commissioner Zeid Raad Al Hussein said investing in human rights today is the best way to provide a more stable future tomorrow, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, the High Commissioner launched a US$253 million appeal to support OHCHR work this year.
As to him, this is the OHCHR most ambitious annual appeal yet and it comes at a time when human rights are «under attack.»
As to the report, Al Hussein pointed out that xenophobia and calls for racial and religious discrimination have entered mainstream discourse in numerous countries.
At the same time, inability to prevent and resolve conflicts and proxy wars are forcing millions to flee their homes.
He said: «Investment in human rights today makes for prevention tomorrow prevention of escalating violations and of the shattering impacts of conflict. Human rights upheld returns stability to entire countries and regions by advancing justice for all.»
As to him, the US$253 million will support a variety of activities, including in-country assistance and the work of UN independent human rights experts, also known as special rapporteurs.
As to Al Hussein, contributions will also support several trust funds on issues such as torture, contemporary forms of slavery and the rights of indigenous people.
