Ban visits anti-poverty programme in Dominican Republic

The UN Secretary-General has travelled to the Dominican Republic on Tuesday where he visited an anti-poverty programme for the most vulnerable, UN Radio says referring to the UN Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) report.
As to the report, Mr. Ban also met with President Danilo Medina and other senior government officials.
Its the UN Chiefs second stop on his Caribbean tour following Mondays visit to Haiti.
While in Haiti, he launched, the «Total Sanitation Campaign» with the Prime Minister in order to scale up sanitation and hygiene interventions in rural areas.
The cholera outbreak which has affected Haiti since October 2010 is still considered the largest in the Western Hemisphere, with more than 700,000 cases and over 8,500 deaths.
During the launch, the UN Chief met with the local community and the families which were affected by cholera.
As to the MINUSTAH, the UN Chief also laid a wreath at a memorial site for the 102 UN staff who died in the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
