Earth Day focuses on green cities
22.04.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
People across the world are being urged to speak out on behalf of Mother Earth so that she can continue to care for life as she has done for more than one thousand of years.
The appeal comes from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his message for the International Mother Earth Day observed on 22 April each year, UN Radio reports.
The Secretary-General said as the population grows, it is important to recognize that mankinds consumption of the planets resources is «unsustainable.»
He called for what he described as «a global transformation of attitude and practice» adding that «it is especially urgent to address how we generate the energy that drives our progress.»
This year Earth Day is focusing on green cities and mobilizing a million people to create a sustainable, healthy environment by greening communities worldwide.
As to the UN Habitat (the UN agency dealing with human settlements), more than half of the worlds population of over seven billion people now live in cities and towns.
