14.04.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Last week the seventh session of the World Urban Forum ended in the city of Medellin, Colombia, where nearly 15,000 participants from around the globe have been gathering to chart the way for better cities, whose development takes into account the needs of everyone.
The Colombian city of Medellin, which recently underwent remarkable transformation, provided what, participants agreed, was the fitting backdrop for these important discussions.
The rallying call for the forum was the cities we want.
Dr. Joan Clos, the United Nations Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UN-Habitat, says:
«We need better planned cities, with more public space, and the capacity to diminish the inequalities that by now are growing in the urban areas. It is not easy, but it is possible. It requires political commitment and some technical capacities.»
The main aspects of the discussions during the Medellin forum was inclusive, equitable and sustainable planning and development of cities.
The outcome of this forum will form the basis for the agenda of the 3rd UN-Habitat conference, to be held in 2016.
