Achieving MDGs still possible says new ECOSOC president
15.01.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Although the deadline for the Millennium Development Goals is fast approaching, there is still time to achieve them, says Ambassador Martin Sajdik of Austria, the newly elected head of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), UN Radio reports.
Mr. Martin Sajdik on Tuesday took over the presidency of the UN body which examines the worlds economic, social and environmental challenges.
He says an ECOSOC meeting scheduled for July will give a «final push» towards the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals, or MDGs, by 2015.
«We have less than 700 days to go but there is still time to do something under the MDGs and to make the MDGs work. The MDGs have the advantage of their measurability. They have been, so to say, very accessible, very understandable. We have to make understand the public, the global public, that there is still the possibility to do something under the MDGs,» Mr. Sajdik admits.
The eight MDGs aim to improve the lives of the worlds poorest people through reducing extreme poverty and providing universal primary education, among other targets.
