Russia increases rice exports
16.01.2013 17:38 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
In 2012, Russia’s rice export has reached its historical maximum 334,000 tons, which is twice as more as was in 2011. Experts questioned by the Voice of Russia said that Russian rice is becoming more and more popular on the foreign markets thanks to its high quality and a competitive price level.
Libya has bought one-third of Russia’s rice exports more than anybody else. Turkey that earlier occupied a leading stand among the buyers has moved to the second place. The traditional importers of rice groats were the former Soviet republics, including Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, and Kyrgyzstan. For the time being, Russia’s share on the world rice market is not very big. However, the fact that Russia is steadily increasing its rice export is undoubtedly reassuring enough.
Experts explain the growing demand for Russian rice among foreign companies by several factors. First of all, by the situation on the world market. The world’s biggest exporter of rice Thailand is raising the prices nonstop. Vietnam’s supplies to the world market are being decreased. The production of rice in the USA is decreasing as well. Amid such developments experts mention that the quality of Russian rice is improving and that Russia’s price policy is reasonable. All this will enable this country to increase its share of rice export in the next few years and to broaden its commodity markets, Vice President of the Russian Grain Union Andrei Slavutin says.
«I think that it is possible, provided that the supportive measures, which are of great help for rice growers today, are retained and rice growers have a chance to increase cultivated land, which means an increase in production.»
Experts say that Russia may oust Egypt from the world rice market in the next few years. Earlier Egypt was the largest exporter of short-grain rice. However, because of the tough water resource regulation the export of the Egyptian rice was sharply reduced. We have to mention here the fact that Egypt, for the first time in the last few years, bought nearly 17,000 tons of rice from Russia.
Experts say that the production of rice in Russia will grow soon. The Krasnodar Region in the south of Russia is giving a boost to the production of long-grain rice the demand for which is currently ensured by import.
