Australia has abnormally high temperatures, says UN weather agency
09.01.2013 10:27 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The last four months of 2012 were abnormally hot in Australia with an average maximum temperature reaching the highest record, UN Radio reports referring to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
Australia has been grappling with bush fires which have devastated the country’s island state of Tasmania.
WMO says that many records have been broken across southern and central Australia.
On Tuesday the Bureau of Meteorology of Australia, which is one of WMO’s, members issued a Special Climate Statement about the extreme heat which is affecting many part of the country.
«This statement says that the last four months of 2012 were abnormally hot across Australia. The average maximum temperature was the highest on record and the current heat wave event which is gripping many parts of Australia extends a four month bout of record hot conditions across Australia. These hot conditions have been made worse by very dry conditions, hence the fires we are currently seeing which have affected Australia since mid-2012,» WMO Spokesperson Clare Nullis admits.
Clare Nullis says it is too early to say that this heat wave in Australia is linked to climate change.
