President Yanukovych discusses cooperation with Turkmen counterpart

President Viktor Yanukovych met with his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov in Ashgabat on Wednesday to discuss further bilateral cooperation, NRCU reports.
Yanukovych praised the Ukraine-Turkmenistan Intergovernmental Commission for Economic and Cultural Cooperation for contributing to the positive development of interstate relations and spoke for increasing bilateral trade. «The difficult economic situation in the world requires active economic cooperation and trade between Ukraine and Turkmenistan,» Yanukovych said, suggesting that the two countries sign a free trade agreement. The Turkmen President noted the friendly character of bilateral relations and pledged his government’s continued efforts for strengthening them. «We have mutual understanding and trust and we have common views on all issues. Our governments are preparing a package of documents to settle a number of interstate issues related to modern challenges,» Berdymuhamedov said. He also praised the active development of trade and economic relations between the two countries. After the talks, the Ukrainian President said in a TV interview that he would pay a state visit to Turkmenistan in early February. During a meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of State in Ashgabat Yanukovych invited his counterparts to visit the construction site of the new safe confinement over the destroyed reactor at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
