The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraines parliament, has approved the provision of state guarantees worth UAH 10 billion ($1.25 bln) for the implementation of a project to build a combined-cycle power plant in Shcholkine (Crimea) through a loan of the Export-Import Bank of China, NRCU reports.
The parliament approved a respective bill at second reading at a plenary meeting on Tuesday evening, UKRINFORM reported. «The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a law introducing amendments to Article 6 of the Law on Ukraines State Budget for 2012 (regarding financing for the construction of a combined-cycle power plant in Shcholkine, Crimea),» the parliaments press service reported. Under a tentative agreement, the projects general contractor is China National Machinery Industry Corp. In addition, Ukrainian companies will be involved in its implementation. An agreement on the construction of a combined-cycle power plant in Shcholkine in eastern Crimea was signed during Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovychs visit to China in September 2010. The plant is to be built at the site where the construction of a nuclear power plant began in 1981, but it was frozen in 1989, because the site was considered geologically unstable.
