10.10.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Nearly 870 million people around the world one in eight are chronically undernourished, according to a report released on Tuesday, UN Radio says.
The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2012, jointly published by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP) says the vast majority of the hungry live in developing countries.
However, according to José Graziano Da Silva, Director-General of FAO, the good news is that progress has been made in the fight against hunger.
«The absolute number fell from 980 million to 852 million. So we have less 128 million people in the 20 years 64 million people yearly. The numbers that we presented today show that its still possible to achieve the first Millennium Development Goal, that is to half the proportion of undernourished people,» admits Mr. Da Silva.
