Population in Europe is ageing, says UN official
20.09.2012 09:28 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The increasing number of older people in Europe is posing challenges for governments in the region, UN Radio says referring to the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
It says that more than 14 per of the population in the region is older than 65 years of age and this number is expected to increase to 20 per cent by 2030.
UNECE Executive Secretary Sven Alkalaj identifies some of the challenges the ageing population poses.
«First of all I would mention protection system which would have an impact on the pension systems because of the larger number, secondly adjusting the labour market because the age of retirement has been pushing forward from now 65 to sometime somewhere 67 in some countries and also, accordingly we have to adjust the health system because of the different needs,» Mr. Alkalaj says.
A two-day ministerial meeting convened by UNECE to discuss this issue started in Vienna, Austria, on Wednesday.
