Developing countries are urged to answer people's aspirations
31.08.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) face the challenge of answering peoples aspirations, says UN Radio.
Thats the message UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon delivered to the leaders of NAM meeting in Teheran, Iran on Thursday.
The Secretary-General reminded the grouping of 120 developing countries that when NAM was formed, nations and people were speaking of freedom from superpower rivalries and colonial domination.
«Today, we see an equally powerful yearning for freedom within nations the freedom to participate, the freedom to make ones voice heard and the freedom to choose ones government. Since the last NAM Summit in Sharm-el-Sheikh in 2009, this part of the world has been at the epicentre: Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen and beyond.»
The UN Secretary-General said that the popular uprisings in the Middle East known as the Arab Spring were not imposed or exported but came from within.
