27.08.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The world will require 10 per cent more water to meet food production needs of over nine billion people by 2050, says UN Radio referring to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
Water and food security is the theme of this years World Water Week, taking place in Stockholm, Sweden from 2631 August.
IFAD says agriculture accounts for 70 per cent of freshwater use and it will use the week to highlight ways rural farmers can produce food with limited water resources.
Rudolph Cleveringa is an IFAD Technical Advisor for Water and Rural Development.
«They can do their cropping in a more water saving measure; they can save water; they can recycle water and nutrients and energy with it. And of course, if they have the means and the markets around them, they can go into precision agriculture: higher value crops that consume less water but yet yield a better interest,» admits Mr. Cleveringa.
IFAD estimates that by 2025, nearly two billion people will be living in areas with absolute water scarcity.
