UN urges greater voice for young people in decision-making
13.08.2012 09:51 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Governments, the private sector, civil society and academia are being urged to open doors for young people and strengthen partnerships with youth-led organizations.
The call comes from United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon in his message on International Youth Day to be observed on Sunday, 12 August.
The Secretary-General warns that without urgent measures, there is a risk of creating what he calls a «lost generation» of squandered talent and dreams.
He says that todays generation of youth, the largest the world has ever known, has unprecedented potential to advance the well-being of the entire human family.
Yet, he adds, too many young people, including those who are highly educated, suffer from low wage, dead-end work and record levels of unemployment.
Mr. Ban says young men and women are not passive beneficiaries but equal and effective partners whose aspirations extend far beyond jobs.
He says young people also want a seat at the table and it is time to integrate their voices more meaningfully into decision-making processes at all levels.
