Sustainable diets and biodiversity are needed, says FAO
09.08.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
There is a need to promote sustainable production of nutritious food and preserve biodiversity in order to improve peoples health.
Thats what is advocated in a book just published by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the NGO Bioversity International.
It says that while over 900 million people in the world suffer from hunger, even more, about 1.5 billion, are overweight or obese.
According to the book entitled Sustainable Diets and Biodiversity, an estimated two billion people dont get enough micronutrients including vitamin A, iron or iodine.
Barbara Burlingame is Principal Officer, FAO Nutrition and Consumer Protection Division.
«The kind of food people should be eating would really be dependent on the agro-ecological zone where they live and in most parts of the world sustainable diets are possible and that would include eating local species and varieties of foods available in that agro-ecological zone, relying on food biodiversity for a sustainable diet, for a healthy diet, for diet that provides all the nutrients needed to meet human nutrient requirements,» says Ms. Burlingame.
Ms. Burlingame said food production should stop concentrating on quantity but quality.
