Rio welcomes world leaders at UN sustainable development conference
20.06.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Over the next three days, heads of state and government will present their visions of a sustainable future as the Rio+20 conference opens in Brazil.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Brazilian Foreign Minister Antônio Patriota, and Brittany Trilford, a teenager from New Zealand, will address the opening session on Wednesday morning.
The largest conference in UN history is officially underway in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
It is estimated that 50,000 people will participate in Rio+20 at the conference site or the nearby exhibitions pavilion and other related venues throughout the city.
So far, nearly 40,000 passes have been issued, roughly 10 per cent of which are for security personnel.
Giancarlo Summa heads the UN Information Centre in Rio de Janeiro.
The whole city of Rio de Janeiro is full of activities connected to Rio+20. All the hotels are fully booked, we have helicopters flying over our heads preparing for the arrival of over 120 heads of state and heads of government, so it’s a really huge conference.
Rio+20 runs through 22 June and has been preceded by a week of dialogues, seminars and exhibitions on themes related to the green economy, environmental stewardship and the role of the private sector in creating a sustainable future.
