Sub-Saharan Africa urged to tackle hunger to sustain economic growth
16.05.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa cannot be sustained if hunger is not eliminated, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) warns in a report released on Tuesday.
The first-ever, Africa Human Development Report says while the region has experienced some of the world’s highest rates of economic growth in recent years, nearly a quarter of its people are undernourished.
«This report reminds us that food security is basic to human development and that food insecurity can trap generations in underdevelopment; that malnutrition and hunger contribute to poor health, reduced worker productivity and less ability to learn. By improving food security and nutrition, countries can accelerate progress on the Millennium Development Goals, advance sustainable human development and build resilience for the future,» said UNDP chief Helen Clark while speaking at the report’s launch in Nairobi.
UNDP says new approaches in several sectors such as health services and rural infrastructure will also be needed to ensure food security for all people in the region.
