First global guidelines on land tenure adopted in Rome

14.05.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — The adoption of guidelines for safeguarding people’s rights to own or access land, forests and fisheries resources has been welcomed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The voluntary guidelines, adopted at an FAO meeting in Rome on Friday outline principles and practices that governments can use when making laws on land tenure. «We know that the poorest people and the most vulnerable groups feel the first and the most pressure when it comes to issues like land-grabbing. Therefore, these voluntary guidelines protect human rights with a very clear focus on small-scale farmers, vulnerable groups, but also on women and therefore we consider these voluntary guidelines an important contribution to achieve food security,» says Alexander Müeller, FAO Assistant Director-General for Natural Resources and the Environment. The guidelines were developed over the past three years through consultation and negotiation between governments, civil society organizations, non-profit, farmers’ associations and the private sector.
