Food aid to Sahel means "difference in life and death" for children
07.05.2012 14:51 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Food assistance to millions of people in the Sahel region of West Africa means a difference between life and death for children there, according to the head of the World Food Programme (WFP).
Ms. Cousin, who is on her first field mission to the region, says that over $400 million is urgently needed to distribute food to more than 8 million people in the drought-affected region.
She said that on Sunday when she visited a community which had not received food assistance and saw the impact of malnutrition on babies.
«I saw babies who, because they were malnourished had eye-infections. But yesterday, when I was in a similar community, the children there where we have distributed support to them were healthy. They were well nourished. Their mothers were able to breastfeed. And so you see what the difference is. Its a difference in life and death for these children,» emphasized Ms. Cousin.
