PM Azarov orders agriculture ministry to tighten control over land use
07.05.2012 10:34 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov charged the Minister of Agricultural Policy and Food, Mykola Prysiazhniuk, to strengthen control over the use of land for the cultivation of industrial crops to avoid depletion of the soil.
The head of government said this during a conference call at the Ministry of Environment held within last week, according to the liaison department of the Cabinet of Ministers Secretariat, UKRINFORM reports.
«I would like to draw your attention to the barbaric exploitation of arable land under industrial crops, which depletes the earth,» Mykola Azarov said. He exemplified a district in Mykolayiv region, where 80 percent of land was planted with sunflowers, while the norm for the region is 29 percent.
The Prime Minister instructed Prysiazhniuk to gather in a week chairmen of regional and district state administrations, which sow commercial crops in excess of the norm, and conduct relevant explanatory work among them.
«A week later, the Minister of Agricultural Policy and Food will invite for a meeting the chairmen of regional state administrations who do not engage seriously in this issue, and ask them how they carry out recommendations of the Ministry of Agriculture to maintain soil fertility. It is no good. We absolutely do not need such exploitation of the earth and such revenues,» Mykola Azarov said.
