Expert meeting focuses on right to food in eastern and southern Africa
03.04.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Food experts, parliamentarians and human rights groups from across Africa are meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, this week to tackle the problem of hunger on the continent.
The meeting is being convened by Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, who organized a similar gathering last year for the Latin America and Caribbean region.
The two-day meeting, which begins in Nairobi on Wednesday, will bring together more than 45 representatives from nine countries including Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
They will look at ways to strengthen the protection of the right to food in the region, as well as share experiences on building human rights approaches to fighting hunger in eastern and southern Africa.
UN Expert Olivier De Schutter says «Fighting hunger and malnutrition is not merely a charitable cause but rather a matter of empowering people to claim their rights to hold governments accountable.»
He says some countries have already adopted strategies and policies, for example South Africa, which has included the right to food in its post-apartheid Constitution.
