Support Green Climate Fund to tackle climate change, says Ban Ki-moon
17.11.2011 08:16 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Leaders gathering at the global climate change conference in Durban, South Africa, later this month need to make progress in establishing a fund to help developing countries deal with climate change.
The appeal has been reiterated by United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, who is currently in Thailand, as part of a visit to three countries in Southeast Asia.
The Green Climate Fund is aimed at channeling up to $100 billion a year to assist developing countries to tackle climate change.
Mr. Ban called for the «strongest possible political leadership and commitment» to address climate change as well as the mobilization of necessary funds.
«At the minimum the Durban conference should be able to implement what had been agreed in Cancun last year in Mexico. That means they should launch this Green Climate Fund and should also launch this Adaptation Committee and its related committees and they should also make clarification on the future of the Kyoto Protocol,» emphasized Mr. Ban.
The Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement for developed countries to cut greenhouse gas emissions, expires next year.
